From new shows to New Orleans, there's a lot of news to catch up on at KNVC!

Jazz FestFirst stop: Crescent City. Beginning Thursday, April 25, KNVC will be simulcasting three hours of live music from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a/k/a Jazz Fest. Your virtual front row seat guarantees you soul-stirring and booty grooving performances from musicians working in every style associated with the city and the state: blues, R&B, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Afro-Caribbean, folk, Latin, rock, rap, country, bluegrass and everything in between. And, of course, all that Jazz!

The Jazz Fest has celebrated the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana since 1970. Now well into its sixth decade, the Fest is a 10-day cultural feast spread across 12 stages and fairgrounds in which thousands of musicians, cooks and craftspeople welcome 400,000 visitors to New Orleans each year. Stone Soup Radio Show

Stone SoupNow we're hungry for some gumbo! Fortunately, the Stone Soup Radio Show has us covered. Host Johnny Carson (no relation) serves up a heaping helping each Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to Noon.

Johnny's robust taste in music will satisfy every appetite. "You know it's not gazpacho, ceviche, or burgoo." he tells us. "It's cool, but it ain't chili, and it's nothing like beef stew. Stone Soup Radio is a gumbo; it's a badass bluegrass brew. We're so glad to say hello and share a bowl with you."

Johnny first hit the KNVC airwaves as a guest host on Ron's Pop Hits earlier in April and if you missed his premiere episode on April 17, grab a spoon and dig in on his KNVC episode page.

Just Punk Enough

Just Punk
Also new to Wednesdays, an old favorite returns to our evening line-up. Just Punk Enough with Andy Harrison premieres April 24, 2024 at 9 p.m. It will be an hourly exploration of all things punk: old school, new school, and definitely a lot of 90s skatepunk. The new edition of Andy's show will bring more vinyl recordings into the mix, highlighting some rarely heard and non-digitized classics from local and regional bands.

Long time fans of Just Punk Enough know that Andy's love of the genre spans the great eras of punk music in the Bay Area, Las Vegas, and the Carson City and Reno scenes. As a musician, Andy has played so many bands from Hot Water Music to Oulley and he is not stopping anytime soon. As a fan, Andy tells us "I'm in it for the love."

A Carson City homegrown native, Andy has been a part of the KNVC family of volunteers from almost the beginning. We're so stoked to welcome him back! Check out some of his past shows on his KNVC episode page and follow him on Instagram

A Masterclass on Master Plans

Master Class
KNVC Carson City Community Radio has launched a new show to share weekly news and insights into the Carson City Land Use Master Plan update. Hosted by Paul Esswein, a former planning commissioner for Carson City, A Masterclass on Master Plans broadcasts live at noon each Friday with guest interviews and opportunities for listeners to join the conversation.

A long-time volunteer at KNVC, Esswein envisions his program as a channel to encourage community involvement in the City government’s master planning process, currently underway. Carson City’s most recent Master Plan was adopted in 2006. Last October, the City contracted with Clarion Associates, a national land use consulting firm, to help with the first major update of the Plan since then. The updated Plan is scheduled to be adopted in early 2025.

"When I served as a commissioner, the public would attend meetings to voice their opinions about a specific developments. Yet the Board’s decisions, once a project is at that stage, are guided by the Master Plan that’s already in place." Esswein tells KNVC. "Now is the opportunity for Carson’s community to be an important part of shaping the City’s goals, objectives and policies for future land development in our town."

As the Carson City official website notes "A Comprehensive Master Plan is a policy document that provides guidance on where and how the community should and will grow in the next 20 years." When implemented in 2025, Carson’s new Master Plan will inform needed Zoning Ordinance changes and also direct policy-makers’ decisions on future land-development projects.

Ongoing episodes of Paul’s show will explore issues that the new Plan can address, including an emerging Work from Home culture, mixed-used development, special-use permitting processes and other changes Carson has seen over the last seventeen years.

The premiere episode featured an interview with Carson City’s Community Development Director Hope Sullivan. Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell is the guest speaker on Friday, April 5. Esswein has a long list of future guests planned and also wants to hear from you. If you have questions or suggestions for Carson City’s next visionary roadmap for the future, reach out to Paul and KNVC on our Contact Page or through our Facebook Page at facebook.com/KNVC95.1FMCarsonCity.

A Masterclass on Master Plans can be heard every Friday at Noon on KNVC 95.1 Carson City Community Radio and streamed live KNVC.org.
